Quick Tip: How to Replace the Carpet on Your Boat Trailer Bunks

Recommended Supplies

  • Socket set
  • Marine carpet
  • Slotted screwdriver
  • Marker
  • Pliers
  • 3/8-inch stainless steel staples
  • Staple gun
  • Utility knife
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Like most material things, the carpet on your trailer bunks will inevitably wear out and will need to be replaced. Replacing the carpet is essential in maintaining the integrity of the bunks themselves as well as protecting the bottom of your boat.

Routine inspection of the carpeting is important because, ideally, you want to replace it before it develops any holes. When there are holes in the carpeting, your boat will be directly exposed to the surface of the bunks, which are typically constructed of treated wood or plastic. Your boat sliding across the uncovered surface of the bunk could result in damage to your boat's hull.

The good news is that replacing the carpet on a boat trailer is fairly straightforward, and can be completed with a few tools and the right supplies. And a little time, of course.

To help you, our friends at Wired2Fish put this video together to walk you through each step, from removing the staples that hold the carpet to the bunks to installing your new carpeting. And when you’re all done, you’ll have one more DIY trick up your sleeve. Plus, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your boat will be adequately protected.
