Quick Tip: How to Back Into a Driveway

Reversing a boat trailer into a narrow driveway can be one of the most stressful and intimidating aspects of boat ownership, especially for new boaters. In this how-to video, Ryan DeChaine from Wired2Fish walks through the steps for stress-free back-ups.

Here are a few key tips to remember:

  • Always get out of your vehicle to make a visual inspection of the road and entry before proceeding. Check for obstacles or obstructions like mailboxes, children or pets in the area. Be extra careful on busy roads, especially near curves or hills with reduced visibility.

  • Adjust your sideview mirrors so you can see down both sides of the boat and trailer.

  • Go slow and give yourself plenty of room on all sides of the trailer when reversing.

  • Make small movements and steering corrections. Remember: Turn the steering wheel to the right to turn the trailer to the left and vice versa.

  • Use a ground guide. Roll down your windows so you can hear your spotter’s instructions.

With these simple tips and some practice, you’ll soon be maneuvering your trailer like a pro.
