Sep 24, 2012
Mercury angler Aaron Martens edged out fellow Mercury pro Edwin Evers on Sunday to claim the 2012 B.A.S.S. All-Star Championship on Lake Decatur in central Illinois.
Martens, of Leeds, Ala., won the head-to-head championship match against Evers with a final catch of 13 pounds, 8 ounces. It was the heaviest catch of the four-day event and 1 pound, 4 ounces more than Evers final-day total.
The all-star event featured 12 of the nation’s best B.A.S.S. Elite anglers and included nine Mercury pros.
All twelve anglers fished the first two days with the top four advancing to the semifinals for match play. The four semifinalists – Martens, Evers, Ott DeFoe and Gerald Swindle – were all Mercury pros.
DeFoe, last year’s B.A.S.S. Rookie of the Year, won the Big Bass Award for his 4 pound, 9 ounce bass caught on Day 2 of competition.
The all-star event concluded the 2012 B.A.S.S. Elite season. The 2013 Bassmaster Classic, slated for Feb. 22-24 on Grand Lake in Tulsa, Okla., is next on the schedule.
