What a great day to be an angler (or become one)! On Saturday, March 27th, the IGFA partnered with Mercury Marine for a Free Family Fishing Clinic, and attracted more than 1,000 people to the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum for casting clinics, inshore pro seminars, thousands of dollars in giveaways, and good times all around. Everyone enjoyed learning how to throw a cast net, identifying species of fish, and fishing in the ponds, but it may have been the kids who had the most fun getting their lines wet. No one was more excited than one young girl who pulled her first bluegill out of the water!
On hand to join in the fishing enthusiasm were Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, with great tips on fishing regulations and the reasons behind them; the Coast Guard Academy, providing excellent resources on boating and fishing safety; Captains Larry Sydnor, Chris Jones, and Mark Johnson, fresh off the Islamorada Shark Fly Tournament with plenty of insights on inshore angling; 99.9 KISS Country, doing a remote broadcast with the “KISS Country Prize Wheel” and concert and baseball ticket giveaways;Mercury Marine’s Scott Beattie emceeing the afternoon and pulling raffle tickets for hats, shirts, Costa sunglasses, fine art prints and rod and reel combos; as well as Bass Pro Shops who had several different styles of fishing boats on display with tons of information for new and experienced anglers alike.
“The best part about this event is that people find out how easy and affordable fishing can be,” according to IGFA Education Director David Matagiese, “Almost everyone lives within bike riding distance from a canal, pond or beach here in Florida, and fishing is a great way to get kids and families out of the house and involved with the outdoors.” The Mercury Marine Free Family Fishing Clinics are quarterly events, and the next one is tentatively scheduled for late summer.
