Mercury’s power steering was designed for and is used in Verado engines. With true finger-tip steering, it is truly an automotive-style power steering system. The complete system was designed by and tested at Mercury Marine, and safely controls additional torque and power larger engine packages provide.
The power steering system has a pump/motor that is mounted inside the boat and is activated when the engine alternator is in operation. The system pumps synthetic fluid from the reservoir into the pressure line to the helm. As you move the steering wheel, the fluid moves through the hoses to the cylinder and returns back to the helm and then to the reservoir. This allows constant pressure in the system, giving the ability to easily steer the boat.
The power steering system comes with fixed or tilt helms with variable valves and can be used with multiple engines (including dual, triple and quad installations)
The cylinders were designed to withstand increased fluid pressures, and 6-cylinder Verado outboards have the cylinder built into the Advanced Mid Section (AMS) of the outboard. The 4-cylinder Verado has a bolt-on cylinder that can withstand the same pressures and use the same helms, fittings and hoses aas the bigger engines.
MerCruiser sterndrives also have power steering to operate the boat, but that system uses a mechanical helm and cable.
Mercury has now developed a heavy-duty power steering system for sterndrives that operates similarly to the Verado system, replacing the mechanical helm and cable with the special Verado helm and hoses. Even on a sterndrive, the heavy-duty power steering system operates very similar to automotive systems. This will typically be used on boats that have more torque such as tritoons or deck boats. It comes in both fixed and tilt systems.
