Mechanical Steering

There are two basic types of mechanical steering systems used in the market today: rotary and rack designs. Both systems have a mechanical cable that is attached to the helm and the engine.

Various types of each system are available. When choosing a mechanical system for your boat, be careful to understand what is required to operate the boat safely for the engine and boat combination.

Both the rotary and rack systems can come in fixed or tilt versions, and both can be either a feedback or no-feedback system. We strongly encourage the use of no-feedback systems for mechanical steering installations.

Cables are sold in various lengths to accommodate different boat sizes and requirements. Please visit your local Mercury Marine dealer for more information.
