The 40, 50 and 60hp models are available with either standard or BigFoot gearcases. BigFoot models are perfect for pontoons and large boats, while the standard gearcases are ideal for aluminum fishing boats, bay boats, and inflatable boats.
No matter the size, these FourStroke outboards are a pleasure to drive. Mercury engineers have created a unique design for easier shifting and refined the throttle resolution setting for smoother low-speed operation. Plus, every 40-60hp FourStroke features a single-latch cowl system for easy, quick release.

Peace Of Mind
Engine Guardian uses key external sensors to monitor all the major functions of your engine. If the proactive operator-warning system detects a potential problem – such as over-revving, overheating, or low oil pressure – Engine Guardian sends out an alert and automatically reduces engine power enough to prevent damage, but still allows you to get to shore.

Introducing the new ECO-Screen feature of the SmartCraft MercMonitor. The ECO-Screen constantly monitors engine RPM, speed, fuel consumption and engine trim to automatically calculate and guide you to your maximize fuel efficiency. This user-friendly feature utilizes yellow and green display colors to signify when you’re operating at your optimal efficiency. This can result in a 10-20% increase in fuel economy.

Step Up To BigFoot
Mercury Marine’s BigFoot FourStroke outboard has earned a reputation as being the ideal pontoon boat gearcase, but it’s also a perfect choice for additional applications, especially aluminum fishing boats and saltwater flats boats that have the ability to handle the 40- to 60-hp BigFoot lineup.
The gearcase was designed specifically to deliver the power, thrust and control that wider, heavier boats demand - regardless of whether that boat is a pontoon, tritoon, deep-V aluminum or fiberglass boat. The BigFoot gearcase is the same size as a standard 115 hp FourStroke Mercury outboard. Thus, the engine is capable of turning a larger-diameter propeller and providing additional power.
Anglers operating aluminum fishing boats who have chosen a BigFoot gearcase are experiencing better hole shot with minimal loss in top-end speed. The longer, bigger components allow the BigFoot to swing a propeller 20 percent larger, which provides better control, especially at low speeds.
The taller gearcase improves performance and efficiency by placing the propeller deeper in the water below turbulence, allowing it to operate in cleaner, less aerated water. The low 2.33:1 gear ratio delivers thrust and maneuverability that big loads demand, and its oversized anti-ventilation plate prevents air from being drawn into the prop - increasing efficiency. All of these features equate to a satisfying boating experience.
Anglers fishing in shallow waters need their outboard to get on plane fast and lift higher. Typically, boats equipped with BigFoot outboards run higher in the water making for a dryer, more enjoyable ride. As an added bonus, fuel economy also improves significantly because less boat is dragging in the water.
Recently, Mercury dealerships performed head-to-head testing between the 60 hp BigFoot FourStroke outboard and a competitive 70 hp four-stroke. The 60 hp BigFoot outperformed the 70 hp in acceleration and fuel economy without any disadvantage to mid-range speed.
